This is a piece of aluminum that is destined to become the "Front Shield," which nowadays we would call the "firewall." It separates the hot, noisy, oil-soaked engine compartment from the cabin and ultimately, the pilot. Yep, just one thin sheet of aluminum is all they used back then.
